5Excellent product! (from the breastfeeding mother of a 9 month old!)May 20, 2010
My son was born four weeks early and I was unable to nurse him for the first ten days. During that time, I faithfully pumped every 2-3 hours to provide breastmilk for him. He is now 9+ months old and although I work full-time he is still exclusively breastfed - thanks to this pump!! I rely on it to pump several times a day and have never encountered any problems.

Advice for any mom who will be pumping regularly:
Purchase 1-2 extra sets of parts. I rotate the parts so that I'm not constantly washing the same set all day long. Several months ago I read about a woman who refrigerates her pump parts in between uses and I've found this to be very convenient (though regular washings are still recommended and required). I don't know if this is recommended, but I've never had any problems doing this. Also, extra membranes are useful because they can disappear during washings...

After pumping, leave the tubes attached and turn the pump back on. The two minute "let-down" cycle is perfect for drying out the tubes. Because you can hear when the pump switches from the let-down cycle to the regular cycle, you will know that it's been two minutes and your tubes are (probably) dried out. I've been doing this all along and have never had any problem with moisture build up in the tubing.

Overall, this pump is excellent for daily, heavy use. I was completely committed to breastfeeding my child and this product has made it possible for me to do so (despite the early challenge of being unable to nurse and having to work full-time!).

1Worthless! Waste of Money and Major Disappointment!!!Nov 23, 2009
I purchased this breast pump after reading all of the great reviews and comparing it to others in anticipation for returning to work after 12 weeks of maternity leave. After 4 weeks of breastfeeding my son and occasionally pumping with an AVENT hand pump, I tried this out for the first time and was completely infuriated with the poor quality and performance. First, it is impossible to adjust the suction when you are holding both containers to your breast. I do not have a 3rd hand to do this and the knob is too small to adjust with and elbow or other appendage. The suction is so poor that I only got a trickle of milk out of each breast, even with it turned up to the maximum level! After 15 minutes of pumping I had about a half ounce in each container and ended up finishing with my hand pump in a total of 5 minutes. With the hand pump I get much higher suction and a constant stream of milk filling the container. I personally do not get hour long breaks at work every 3 hours to use this worthless pump and really expected better from this company. I do not know if I got a defective pump but intend to contact Medela in regards to getting a refund since it is impossible to return it for the almost $.. it cost me! I would NOT Recommend this to my worst enemy and think it is the biggest waste of money on the history of Earth that I am now stuck with.

4Get more milkOct 21, 2009
I ordered this product for my second baby. With the 1st I used the Avent Isis hand pump. I have to go back to work sooner this time around, so I purchased the Medela. I like the speed of double pumping, and I do seem to get more milk with the Medela, however, I missed the comfort of the massaging cushions from the Avent. So I called Avent and ordered 2 of the massaging cushions for the Isis breastpump and they fit perfectly on the Medela breast shields. I get more milk using them (by about an ounce), and they are more comfortable for use with stronger suction. So the pump is great, but even better using the Avent Massaging Cushions! The cushions are $10 each and are available only from Avent/Phillips customer support. 800-542-8368 Mon-Fri 8:30-5:30 ET.

5Part of my regular routine, works great.Sep 12, 2009
As a first-time mother I was nervous about using such a bulky, industrial-looking product, and in truth pumping is not an elegant activity, any way you look at it. But the pump has helped me store up loads of breast milk for a business trip I was planning (300 oz for a 5 day trip), and I rely on it every day since my baby is in day care. The cups are stiff and it may seem uncomfortable, but I would think this prevents them from changing shape after steam cleaning in the microwave many times.

I bought this pump so I can use the batteries when I'm not at home, but it ends up the whole bag is too cumbersome to lug around, so I ended up getting the manual pump for when I pump in public restrooms. This works equally well in terms of the amount I can pump, but for time-efficiency this product does the job really well.

Although I've been concerned about mold growing in the device, from water working its way into it from the tubing; I make sure to let it "dry pump" after I'm done, as the instructions say, but not sure if that alone is going to keep it clean. I'm too scared of taking the parts apart to check for mold. It would be helpful if Medela issued instructions for that, instead of the warning the user not to take it apart.

4A life saver!Feb 24, 2009
This is the closest I could find on amazon to the pump I've used. I used two different medela pump in style breast pumps for two different children and have had pretty decent results.

The one I'm using now has a different strap than pictured but I've used it every day 6-8 times a day for 5 months and its still working perfectly. The bag is dirty and the seems have busted but the motor is still running. Both bags were the same un-appealing material, and aren't overly sturdy.

Overall, I've had the best luck with this breast pump. I would recommend it to anyone who has to supplement and pump, or anyone who needs to go back to work etc. If there is any reason you need to pump on a regular basis this is a good worthwhile investment.

If I hadn't had these pumps I'm not sure I'd have been able to give my children milk as long as I did/have. Its a life saver to not have to pump one breast at a time, or do it manually.
