5Simple and easy to useFeb 06, 2010
Just like it says! Work great and super easy to use. I really like the test pads that come with the kit to make sure everything is working.

I tried this on several items in the house and all tested negative. However, when I used it on a pencil that is lead, it also tested negative. I dont believe this works.

The instructions state to crush the swab in two places and then squeeze until a small amount of fluid shows at the end of the swab - then you have two minutes to rub the swab on the surface you are testing. If it turns red or pink or purple, lead is present. The test will not work if you swish the paint chips around in the solution. The swab must be rubbed on each surface you are testing. Consumer reports gives this product a high rating for detecting surface lead.

1Inaccurate ResultsDec 04, 2008
I bought these swab, took a sampling of paint chips from around the house, put them on a plate, and drowned the chips in the solution from the swab, and swirled the chip around with the swab for over 2 minutes. No sign whatsoever of pink or red. The paint chips included all layers of paint, down to the wood.

I thought all was clear to start stripping my interior trim. But then we had a professional come with an x-ray scanner and he confirmed that all of our trim had relatively high levels of lead.

So, these things gave a false negative for Lead. Very dangerous. Get a professional with an x-ray device.
