Fantastic AlarmJul 31, 2009 We recently built a pool and have 3 children under the age of 7, so an alarm was a must at our house. We did tons of research and ended up buying this pool alarm. We have had it for 2 months now and cannot say anything bad about the alarm. It's a bit pricey, but it's well worth the extra money. We live in Kansas where it can be VERY windy. The heaviest rain and strongest wind has yet to set off this alarm. This is the main reason we bought this brand. All of the others sense movement in the pool instead of water displacement like this one. It has functioned flawlessly - arming and disarming exactly when it's suppose to. It works great too. We have occasionally forgotten to put it in "swim mode" before swimming and it alarms seconds after we jump in. I would highly recommend this alarm to anyone with a pool - it does it's job perfectly without becoming a pain like some of the other brands.
Things You Should Know About This Alarm Before BuyingJun 11, 2009 I purchased this alarm after doing a lot of research. I returned it about 2 weeks later.
First, know that the remote must be plugged into an outlet at all times. You cannot carry it around with you or really move it at all. I found this to be very misleading in the marketing because they call it a "wireless" remote and because they never show a picture of the remote with the AC Adapter cord attached to it. Even the picture on the box fails to show the cord. I was very disappointed in the various reviews I read (notably, a Good Housekeeping pool alarm ratings article) that did not note this.
Second, the remote connection to the alarm unit is very weak. I lost a connection with the alarm unit all the time, even though I did as exactly as the instructions stated: Keep in a window with an unobstructed direct line to the pool and within 100 feet.
Third, and most troubling, the alarm would apparently disarm itself without me knowing. What should happen is that you disarm the pool to go swimming. Once everyone is out and the water settles, the alarm alerts you that it is arming itself by counting down about four or five beeps, followed by one long beep. My wife and I would be sitting by the pool, with no one in the pool and with the alarm supposedly armed, when we would hear it counting down and arming itself. Maybe I had a bad unit, but I didn't want to waste time with another one to find out.
Fourth, know that it takes a good 10 seconds for the alarm to sound after someone falls in. In fact, most pool alarms take this much time, so it's not a knock on this particular model (I knew this before I bought it). It's just something you should know if you are in the market for this type of alarm, which reacts to changes in water pressure.
I am still looking for a pool alarm, if anyone has suggestions. I'm now leaning towards the Safety Turtle, knowing full well that it only works if the child is wearing the wrist sensor.
